Missouri state law requires that real property with delinquent taxes must be auctioned off to try and recoup some of that tax money owed to the various taxing authorities in St. Louis County. A taxing authority is an entity who levies taxes to provide a service, such as school, fire and light districts. Not paying property taxes takes away money needed and counted on to provide services. As a result, properties with three or more years of unpaid taxes are offered for auction during the Collector’s annual tax sale.
The auction starts at 10:00 AM in the County Council Chambers on the first floor of County Administration building, 41 South Central Avenue, Clayton, Missouri, 63105. Sales are made to the highest bidder, and all sales are final. A word of caution to potential bidders: There may be outstanding liens against the property, so be sure to find out as much as possible about a property before making a purchase.
Anyone wishing to participate in the sale must register before making bids. Registration begins at 8:30 AM on the day of the sale in the office of the Collector of Revenue, located on the street level of the County Administration building. All Bidders must have some form of verifiable current picture identification and must be current on their taxes. There will be no changes in registration made after the fact, except for a properly noted assignment of the certificate of purchase.
A complete list of properties available for bid is published in the St. Louis Countian on July 23, July 30 and on August 6, 2013. It is important to remember that the list is subject to change without notice as property owners may pay the delinquent taxes before the time of the tax sale.
Tax sale listings and accompanying instructions can also be accessed online at http://revenue.stlouisco.com/Collection/TaxSales.
The online lists will be updated periodically, but remain subject to change without notice.
If you are planning on bidding at the Collector’s tax sale, be sure to read and adhere to all instructions accompanying the list. Failure to understand the provisions listed could result in substantial material and monetary loss.
